Books I Can’t Recommend Enough
Reblogging for future reference! Have already read a great number of these (post forthcoming) but some good suggestions I haven’t yet gotten to!
Inspired by SuiteP’s question, here are the books I’m currently telling my friends to read, already!
In no particular order, with links to their previous mentions on ye olde blog….
- A Visit from the Goon Squad
- A Gate at the Stairs — one of the most moving books I’ve ever read
- Bossypants
- The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean
- The Convent
- The Namesake — I was especially fascinated because M. is the child of Indian immigrants
- Never Let Me Go
- The Privileges — took me awhile to get into it, but ultimately, humbling in scope and character development
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
- An Object Of Beauty — oh that sexy New York art world
- Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers — fascinating!
- Cheerful Money
- Cooking for Mr. Latte — the recipe-filled compliment to Cheerful Money: the authors are married and retrace their relationship in their memoirs
- Wanderlust — the memoir of a travel writer
- Story of My Life — Jay McInerney doing what he does best
- How Did You Get This Number? — the lady-author we’d all like to be
And below are books that I started but then got a bit bored with — I tend to be very fickle with Kindle books — but I will someday return to, because they are good…
- Swamplandia!
- The Ballad of West Tenth Street — right around the corner from where M. grew up
- The Paris Wife
- Inheritance — I love old English piles and the toffs who own ‘em
- The Cookbook Collector — sisters and the internet bubble
- Let The Great World Spin
- The Tiger’s Wife — I’ve heard lots of high praise for the book; also, the author is young, which I’m always interested in
- Savage Grace — a true story of matricide
- I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie — who doesn’t secretly want to be a groupie?
Finally, these are high on my list (and in some cases, already on my Kindle)…
- Blood, Bones, and Butter — I adore her restaurant … and loved Sharing Time’s review
- The Twisted Thread — I love a good boarding school mystery
- The Psychopath Test — great author
- The Warmth of Other Suns — not exactly a beach read
- The Metropolis Case
- Great House
- Daughters of the Revolution — another boarding school!
- The Feast of Love — A Midsummer Night’s Dream, reimagined
- Your Voice In My Head — just read this review
- and all of Slaughterhouse 90210’s faves from 2010
I have read A Visit from the Goon Squad and Bossypants and just picked up Wanderlust. But it’s always great to see what friends are reading and suggesting.
